All Aboard the ACC Failbus

Typing this post is surprisingly easy with a foot in my mouth. For all the discussion of the ACC rising up to make themselves respectable this year, for all the posts about their match-ups with the SEC, and the podcasts and predictions, the ACC has reclaimed its position as the joke of the BCS.
The biggest disappointment of week 1 was of course Virginia Tech. This is not because Va Tech has the worst team or even the worst performance, but once again the conference had given the banner to the Hokies to ride into Atlanta and vanquish a top 5 SEC foe. The Hokies put up a valiant fight but in the end ironically it was their defense that let them down. Alabama scored 34 on Tech and by the end of the game ginger boy Greg McElroy was picking the defense apart. The Tide made great adjustments in the second half and against Bama's defense there was no way the Hokies could get swept up in a shootout. The chants of "SEC..SEC" in the crowd as the clock ticked down was a reminder that when it comes to football, the SEC has dominion over the ACC.
The Hokies are not alone in their ineptitude. NC State had a another deplorable performance against South Carolina, losing 7-3 last Thursday. Wake Forest had 4 turnovers against Baylor as the Bears avenged their opening week loss from last year 24-21. Remember how we mentioned Maryland as a possible sleeper on the podcast? They really had their stuff together as they lost by the slimmest of margins to Cal, 52-13.
But losses to other BCS conferences where not all the ACC had up its sleeve. Duke and Virginia, while both picked to finish at the bottom of the ACC, embarrassed the conference further by losing to FCS schools Richmond and William & Mary respectively. Outside of the Miami-FSU game tomorrow the conference went 4-6 in week 1 and those four wins were against Middle Tennessee,Northeastern, Jackson State, and the Citadel. Perhaps Catfish said it best, "When does basketball season start."

Some Quick Thoughts From Last Night
#14 Boise State 19, #16 Oregon 8
>We expected this one to be high scoring, but ti was the Bronco defense that was the most impressive unit, holding the Ducks to 152 yards.
>Boise State is going to lay claim to this victory in its BCS argument if they go undefeated. I think they have proven they are good enough to play against the big conferences both in the past and this year but will the luster of this win become dull when December rolls around? If Oregon goes in the tank then the win will not be as impressive in some voters' mind.
>Just when you think Phil Knight and Nike cannot come up with a more ridiculous uniform they do something like this:
And totally not redeem themselves.
>LeGarrette Blount even said something before the game about controlling his emotions but after getting beat in back-to-back years by the Broncos, I guess it was too much to be taunted by Byron Hout. Blount let the fist fly(video here) and before we condemn this kid to Guantanamo Bay, let it be known he apologized after the game and will be punished by the NCAA in all likelihood punished severely.
South Carolina 7, NC State 3
>If you have not had a chance to listen to our podcast, then when you do you will hear us speak of how both of us thought NC State would win this game. Then you will mock us and man do we deserve it.
>The level of offensive play on the field was pathetic for two schools from BCS conferences. Missed throws, dropped balls, the stupid penalties, and the game-winning touchdown juggled and flopped away by NC State. I do not buy the first game of the season crap; either you are ready to play or you're not. That's why practice starts the previous spring and you workout all summer.
>It is incomprehensible to me how the refs missed the clothesline tackle on the last punt return by NC State. Jesse Palmer and Craig James were like acid poured in my ears most of the game but they said it perfectly when they asked how the refs missed it. If fast man is running down the field and tackler goes high and fast man is jerked back like a rag doll, then hands to the head or face likely did occur.
>I banged the drum about how the ACC could make headway against the SEC in their 7 games during the season and so far they are 0-1, if Virginia Tech loses to Alabama tomorrow that person with their head in the sand will be me.

NFL Is Around The Corner
"Ugh. Mercury Morris. This has all been rehashed before, but let's just get it out of the way up top. The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the saddest, douchiest collection of Grey Ghosts ever assembled. During their "dominant" regular season run that year, the Dolphins beat a grand total of two teams with winning records (and both of those team were a mere one game over .500). The winning percentage of the Dolphins opponents that year was .365. This year, the team with the NFL's easiest schedule is Chicago, with a .414 winning percentage for its opponents, which includes playing the 0-16 Lions twice). Texas Tech's nonconference schedule is harder than the supposed gauntlet those Dolphins had to run. I don't even know how you end up with a schedule that easy. We should note 1972 as a strike year or something."BDD
Could not have said it better myself. We have not forgotten the NFL here at ASD even though the college game returns tonight we will preview the pros next week in anticipation of the Thursday opener. Continue reading...
