Knicks Promise Steph Curry He's Their Guy?

Accoding to NBAdraft.net:

"A rumor that has been gaining steam is that the Knicks will select Stephen Curry with their 8th pick. We've received word that there could be truth to this from inside sources claiming that Curry chose to put his name into the draft this year based on the Knicks assuring Curry that they would use their lottery selection to draft him."

Any time I post about Steph, I always have to check in on our friend, Jimmy Patsos. Inexplicably, he's paid almost $30,000 more than the dean of Loyola, but I digress.

We've been firmly on the Curry NBA bandwagon and think the Knicks would be a perfect fit for his skill set. Hell, maybe Donnie Walsh listens to the podcasts, because on multiple occassions we've said Curry would be the perfect fit for several reasons. There are several similarities between Steph and Steve (Nash), whom if you'll recall won mulitple MVPs in Mike D'Antoni's system. Neither is a tremendous defender or overly quick, but both are exceptional passers and can be deadly in the pick and roll. This is not to suggest Steph steps on the court and starts challenging The King or the Black Mamba for the crown, just that he'll be in a position to succeed. His friendship with LeBron will be used to attempt to lure LBJ to New York and even if the King decides to remain in Cleveland, Chris Bosh could be a tremendous consolation prize. At this point it's only a rumor, but the Knicks would be wise to re-sign David Lee, allow Nate Robinson to walk (because it's accepted one of them has to go), and draft their point guard of the future this June.

The Day Harangody's POY Chances Died

Pauly Pavilion has been home to plenty of history in its day, and the latest chapter was written on Saturday. Any chance Luke Harangody had of winning the 2009 Player of the Year disappeared. His numbers are comparable to Blake Griffin's and while his team was struggling, that the performances were equitable and he plays in a tougher conference would have some voters leaning his way. All that changed when the Fighting Irish played at UCLA and "the Goad" was held to five points on two of twelve from the field.

He's just the most recent POY candidate to be held in check to the point of single digits. Arizona State's James Harden was kept to just four points in a loss to USC. Tyler Hansbrough had only eight, when Carolina survived thanks to a buzzer beating 3-pointer by Ty Lawson at Florida State. Only a few of the POY candidates have avoided a single digit game, namely Jodie Meeks and Blake Griffin. With Meeks's team struggling through a three-game losing streak, his field goal percentage and chance at the award are slipping. While the award appears to be getting close to defaulting to Griffin, there's still another candidate that will garner some votes. Stephen Curry.

Stephen Curry was also victimized by a low no scoring night, thanks to Jimmy Patsos, but because his team still won by thirty he should feel no ill effects. With so many of the top candidates having rough patches during the season, Curry will become a fashionable choice. It's like people that claim Paul Giamatti is the country's best actor, not because of anything factual, but because he does independent and artsy films and it makes the person saying it feel superior, as if they are smarter than the average person who just can't appreciate that type of greatness. I love Steph Curry as much as the next guy, but it's a thin line between Kevin Martin and Steph Curry, and that line has a name: Jason Richards. Being paired with Richards (a NBA-caliber point guard) in the back court last season enabled Davidson's incredible run, and without that run Curry's name doesn't even enter the conversation. Curry's an incredible player, but if people were going to give Harangody the lean over Griffin because of conference, Griffin has to be extended the same courtesy.

Bob Knight Sees Steph Different Than You

One of the hottest debates (not involving Psycho T) in college basketball this season has been whether or not Stephen Curry will be able to effectively make the transition to the NBA. In case you missed it, here's Bob Knight talking about Steph's passing. "Take a good look at him, because he's as good a passer as has ever played college basketball." When engaging others about this issue, remember to bring up his passing as many people try to lump him in as just a scorer.

Jimmy Patsos You're a &%&*#&!

Mike Gundy is a man. Aron Ralston is a man. Jimmy Patsos you are no man. Patsos, the head basketball coach at Loyola (Md). Last night, his Greyhounds took on the Davidson Wildcats, falling 78-48. There is no dishonor in losing to a ranked team, but Patsos's antics deserve to be ridiculed. He decided to implement a Triangle-and-two defense. Instead of guarding Davidson's two best scorers he stuck two defenders on Steph Curry for the entire game. Full Court. The result was Curry standing in the corner (almost certainly at the instruction of his coach, Bob McKillop), while his teammates played four on three. With Loyola leading 9-4 early, Davidson reeled off 18 straight points and Patsos did not change his defense. When the Wildcats scored 19 straight later in the game, Patsos remained unwavering. With just over three minutes left in the game and his team trailing by 30, Patsos continued to double Curry as he stood at midcourt. Curry, previously the nation's scoring leader, finished with 0 points on only 3 shots.

Again the problem is not losing, but doing so without a shred of class. Patsos seemed quite pleased with himself (and his agenda), "Anybody else ever hold him scoreless? I'm a history major. They're going to remember that we held him scoreless or we lost by 30?" Patsos knowing what he did was detestable felt obligated to point out he's not just a clueless dad rec league coach, "I know the fans are mad at me, but I had to roll the dice as far as a coach goes. I'm not some rookie coach, I won a national title as a top assistant coach to Gary Williams. For 13 years I spent on Tobacco Road. I coached a couple of No. 1 picks in the draft. And we scored 48 points. That's the problem that Loyola basketball had today." Oh, so you're a scumbag with credentials? Congrats, Mr. Gecko. Patsos even managed to earn the scorn of Davidson coach, Bob McKillop, a coach known for his class, "It seemed to me they were willing to risk the game at the expense of locking Steph up," McKillop said. "When you put two people on somebody and you do it for 30 minutes and at the end of the game, you have to wonder what the reasons for that are."

The unflappable Curry once again rose above stating simply, "I don't think irritate is the word. Just confused. When they're down by that much and still allowing us to get open shots. It kind of surprised me.” Coach Patsos, you could learn something from this young man. Most telling of how classless Patsos's performance was, his own school's game recap won't even mention the pathetic tactics he used. In fact, they're so embarassed at the way they shutout a National Player of the Year candidate, Curry's name isn't even mentioned in the article. Jimmy Patsos, you're right you'll be remembered, not for shutting out a tremendous player, but for selling out your team to further your own agenda. You may have once been a coach on the rise, but now you'll never be anything other than an infamous loser.
