Mr. Ilya Kovalchuk had a bad moment Wednesday when the Devils faced a shootout against the ASD adopted NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres. The man being paid $100 million dollars to put puck in net sent puck lazily adrift in the critical moment. He blew it. Our friend of the blog Walter Peck is a Devils fan (and a veteran [/belated salute!]) so I'm sure this play and the subsequent 4-10-2 record does not please him. Being winless at home is pretty dismal as well. The Sabres are a slightly less vomit-inducing 5-9-3. Fear not Jersey fans, Kovalchuk has 15 years to make that blunder up to you.

Goodbye Buffalo Puckbunnies, We Barely Knew You
At the beginnig of the hockey season, Catfish and I considerd adopting an NHL team in hopes that it would provide us with a incentive to watch more hockey. After weighing the options carefully, we chose Buffalo. Not only did the experiment not work in that we did not watch more hockey than normal, but the Sabres did not make the playoffs. They finished 10th in the Eastern Conference, 2 points behind Montreal and Florida. That's right, the team from Buffalo, New York finished behind the team from South Florida that has palm trees on their jerseys. But not to worry, the Panthers missed the playoffs as well.
The Sabres can point to injuries, but in a 16 team playoff system, that is not an excuse. So more good news for Buffalo! Well, at least they have TO. In other news, Sabres' coach Lindy Ruff has been chosen to coach Canada at the world championships so he has that going for him...which is nice. For those NHL teams still playing, the games start Wednesday.

Wednesday Links
Catfish is working on a post that will shake the very foundations of the blogosphere...or get himself flamed horribly. I am swamped at the office and working on a nonsports, nonsensical top ten to be posted later. This combination leads to a wonderful list of links to keep you up on what's going on in sports and the world.

The ASD Universe Explodes Tonight
The slate is extremely busy for ASD and friends this evening.
First off, we have our weekly trivia contest a the local pub. After winning 4 weeks in a row we hit a 3 week losing streak but got back on track last week. Luckily, I will not be alone this week as Catfish and Xtra Medium will run the Triangle Offense of useless knowledge. A win means 25 bucks off our tab, a loss means humiliation and degredation in the form of free pizza or a bucket.
The Buffalo Sabres are 8 games over .500 and in 7th place in the Eastern Conference but just 3 points out of 4th. They square off against the Senators at the HSBC tonight.
In the NBA, Catfish is riding high after the Bobcats snapped their 5 game losing streak Monday. Their last game before the all-star break is tonight at home against Washington. The days off will certainly help get everyone healthy, especially Gerald Wallace. The Wizards have lost 8 of their last 10 and the Cats can not afford to drop this one going into the break because with the Bucks most likely out of the playoff picture now with their injuries, Charlotte is very much in the playoff race.
Before the main course of UNC-Duke, my favorite (tied with the CANES) team UCONN hosts Syracuse (ESPN 7 PM) which is the alma mater of our friend the Concierge. Going back to our high school days games between these two have been heated and wagers were made and hillarity ensued. The Orange need to get back on track but will have a tough test tonight in Gampel.
Then of course we have the game of the night and I'm willing to bet Catfish will be lacing the air with some profanities. I cannot see Carolina losing this game but if Duke is going to stay in this they have to shoot more than 34 percent from three and get one or more of the key Tar Heel players in foul trouble. Oh my the officiating should be fun in this one.
The countdown on the clock at the office has already begun...almost gametime.

Checkin Up on the Sabres
It's been awhile since we paid attention to our adopted ASD NHL team and not surprisngly, Buffalo has been playing well while we ignored them. Well it's time to extend my icy lips for what is sure to be another Cleet kiss of death. Buffalo has won 4 of its last 5 including a 10-2 pounding of the Oilers last night in Edmonton. It was the worst home loss in Oilers history. The Sabres sit in 7th place currently in the Eastern Conference, 4 points behind Philadelphia and 3 ahead of Florida. Right-winger Drew Stafford scored his first goal ten seconds into the game and ended with a hat-trick.
The quote of the game goes to Oilers coach Craig MacTavish who used one of my favorite words to describe the beatdown, “It was a debacle of monumental proportions.” Anytime an event can be described as a debacle, it's a good thing, unless you are on the receiving end of said debacle.
The Sabres face a tough team in Calgary on the road tonight.

Buffalo Sabres Slumping
"We're in tough right now." So says Sabre head coach Lindy Ruff. Our beloved ASD hockey team is in the midst of a 5 game losing streak. During the streak they have been outscored 25-9 and currently sit 9th in the Eastern Conference standings. After leading the NHL early on in GAA, Ryan Miller has become more like mesh netting than a stone wall. The Sabres most recent loss was to the Islanders 4-2 at home with Patrick Lalime giving Miller a rest.
The Sabres try to get back on track tonight against division leading Boston whom they are 1-2 against this year. What's going on? Did we give the Sabres the kiss of death? Hopefully they turn it around because ahead on Friday and Saturday they have games against Pittsburgh and Montreal.

Checking Up on Our Beloved Sabres and Their Women
Due to recent events, which include my hard drive turning itself into fondu, we here at ASD have been trying to keep up with the fast paced world of sports. In our hurrying we have almost, and I say almost forgotten about our adopted hockey team for the year. The Bufs are sitting at 8-3-3 which is tied for second in the Northeast division with Boston and 1 point behind Montreal. The Sabres sit in the midst of a 2 game losing streak which they hope to snap tonight at HSBC Arena as they host the St. Louis Blues. Some chatter on the Sabres from Buffalo and beyond after the break.
In Catfish's introduction to the Sabres he informed us that Buffalo girls are easy. I have yet to test this theory(well I did on one girl but that's too small a sample size) but there was a potential for examination of this hypothesis on Friday night. While enjoying a bucket of suds at a local tavern, Xtra Medium espied a young lady wearing a Sabres jersey. This was a somewhat rare sight down south and we thought it an excellent chance for XM to pursue this matter for his own gain as well as our curious scientific minds. What came from this turned out to be XM flailing an arm at the girl as she made her way to the bathroom and saying, "Go Sabres" as she passed by. Due to a variety of reasons I cannot recall what she said, but I'm thinking overall we can gather that the original hypothesis is true but requires further testing. She was flanked by a pretty strong front line as she got back to her table, but XM was not in the mood to attack even though we were at even strength with me and Catfish. I don't know what assist I could have provided but we both knew that if we needed an enforcer, Catfish would take off the gloves. When K-man arrived giving us the 1 man advantage, it was already too late and the powerplay was killed. The three stars of the evening were the girl in the Sabres jersey, Xtra Medium for making the half-assed attempt at talking to her, and K-man for bringing the girl who wanted to discuss politics.
Back to the Sabres, they have lost two in a row going into tonight's game. Some news and notes on the team:
Here is the homepage for the city of Buffalo. It says they are called the Queen City, just like Charlotte. Who was the Buffalo Queen? Calamity Jane? Queen Victoria?

Head Coach Lindy Ruff was not enthused with the Sabres recent performance. [Sabres Official Site]
Thomas Vanek is currently the NHL Leader in goals with 12. He's also tied for 253rd in assists!
The Sabres have another home game Friday versus Columbus and then travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday against the Penguins and the kid. Buffalo currently sits 5th in the Conference which goes to show even though they have started well, they can't afford back-to-back losses like they had last week. Let's pick it up boys, you can't win a playoff spot in November, but you can probably lose one.

It's Miller Time for the Sabres
The Sabres proved their worth over the weekend winning 5-0 against another one of our NHL finalists, the Washington Capitals. Ryan Miller had 29 saves for his 8th career shutout. The Sabres are currently sitting second in the northeast division, one game behind the Montreal Canadiens. A big boost was the return of center Tim Connolly to the Sabre line-up as he had an assist on a Derek Roy goal. Thomas Vanek added two goals of his own in the win. Buffalo is at New Jersey tonight.

It's Sabre Time!
No, not Bret Saberhagen. Tonight our newly beloved Buffalo Sabres host the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first official Sabre game as the official NHL team of ASD. The 6-1-2 Sabres should get the victory over the Ning dynasty and prove why they were chosen over the Lightning, who were an ASD finalist.

ASD Has Joined Sabre Nation
The polls are closed and much to Xtra Medium's delight, we have decided to adopt the Buffalo Sabres as our NHL team to follow for the 08-09 season. The Sabres have never hoisted a Stanley Cup in their history, but maybe with our help we can get the team over the top this year and make history. The Sabres have got off to a fast 6-1-1 start, with their only loss coming last night to Ottawa after we made the decision to follow them. We consider this not an ill omen of things to come, as we will do everything to bring the Cup to Buffalo. Coming soon we will have reports on the team, the fans, and the games in order to bring hockey to the forefront of American sports. Ok, we won't be that idealistic but it should be fun following a team we have never covered before. Rest assured, we will investigate every crease and cranny to make this season special. Basically it will be a lot more of this:

Buffalo Sabres: Pros and Cons for ASD Adoption
Earlier this week ASD began a quest. Not a Tribe Called Quest, but a quest to adopt a new NHL team. Cleet has already struck on the Ning and now it's time for the pros and cons of choosing the Buffalo not-Bisons. More after the break.
PROS
Power!: Sometimes a video just says it all.
Better Days: Buffalo is the home of the Goo Goo Dolls and Rick James...NO, I won't be an enabler.
No Stanley Cups: No one can accuse us of front-running, but the team does regularly make the playoffs, which is a plus, because the NHL playoffs are the best in professional sports. Perhaps ASD can be just the force the Sabres need to push it to the next level.
Young Stud in the Net: Goalkeeper Ryan Miller enters just his third full season with in the NHL and has a brand new long-term contract. Miller improved through his first two seasons with Buffalo appearing in the 06-07 All-Star game, but had a down year last year along with the rest of the team. So far this season he's looking to rebound with a 1.45 GAA. This could be the year that Miller begins to join the upper echelon of goalies in the league.
Toughness: The Sabres captain Craig Rivet had arthroscopic knee surgery and is going to be out... for TWO WEEKS. I know people that are out longer than that after tweaking something in a flag football game.
CONS
No Stanley Cups: Any time you adopt a child team, you want to believe that you aren't adopting something sickly. You want something fun, a winner or at least someone good at math. The Sabres didn't make the playoffs last year and their may be smarter, more talented kids teams for us to adopt.
Buffalo Girls are Easy>: This could easily be a positive, but if all the girls are too busy drooling over the players to notice us, how are we supposed to use our vast knowledge of the team to impress the ladies?
The New Logo: Maybe I'm just a traditionalist, but I couldn't agree with this more...
On a Personal Note: I have no personal note, other than to say that the girl that sat by us in European History was in love with Cleet and she was a Sabres fan. I'm pretty sure I was awake long enough to remember that correctly.
